Even though I lost touch with him, it was a pleasure to see that Roger Mensink is continuing to publish his remarkable photographs. Trained as a painter in UCLA, his acute eye is well tuned to the discourses of Visual Culture.

I have been carefully re-reading the book Hemingway's Boat by Paul Hendrickson and trying to formulate my stance towards this book vis a vis my long interest in Hemingway (the man and the author). Without getting into a critique of the book which was already done whether positively or negatively, it seems that two aspects are certain. The first is the impact Hemingway left on many people whether they knew him personally or through his work. The second issue is that Hemingway's life is shaped by an inner trauma that is not necessarily clearly defined. Hendrickson is successful here in connecting this common issue between Hemingway and his protege the Maestro aka Arnold Samuelson. See here their remarkable dialogue on board the Pilar. In addition I was trying to think about Hemingway's work in comparison to Paul Bowles in its psychological aspect and was wondering if they could have a productive dialogue if they ever met (probably not)

I met Lena in her place Clara in the village of Amigdalokefali in 2009. It was a special place which reflected the unique personality of Lena. This year I was very saddened to find out that Lena had passed away suddenly last year. The last time I saw her was in 2010, when she gave a dinner party for few friends in her place. Lena shared her time between Copenhagen and Crete, Working six months as an accountant in order to be able to live the rest of the year in Crete. Be her memory cherished.
